Electrochemical Behaviour of 18 Carat Gold with Artificial Saliva in Pres-ence of Ciprofloxacin and Nimesulide Tablets

Abstract:


The corrosion behavior of 18 carat gold with artificial saliva presence of Ciprofloxacin and Nimesulide tablets has been evaluated by electro chemical impedance spectra and polarization study. Generally orthodontic wires made of many metals and alloy. Many tablets are also orally taken. In the oral environment these orthodontic wires undergo many types of corrosion. The present study the corrosion behavior of orthodontic wire made of 18 carat gold, with artificial Saliva in the presence of tablets namely, Ciprofloxacin and Nimesulide. Nyquist plots and Bode plots have been drawn. Charge transfer resistance (Rt), double layer capacitance (Cdl) and Impedance values have been calculated. It is observed from electrochemical studies, corrosion resistance increases for the 18 carat gold electrode in the presence artificial saliva with Ciprofloxacin tablet and thecorrosion resistance decreases for the 18 carat gold electrode in the presence artificial saliva with Nimesulide tablet. So, people having orthodontic wires made of 18 carat gold should not hesitate to take Ciprofloxacin tablet and should avoid taking Nimesulide tablet. Methods: Electrochemical polarization studies and electrochemical impedance spectra have been used to confirm the formation of protective film formed on the metal surface during corrosion inhibition process. Results: The electrochemical polarization study and electrochemical impedance spectra leads to the conclusion that people having orthodontic wires made of 18 carat gold should not hesitate to take Ciprofloxacin tablet and should avoid taking Nimesulide tablet. The active ingredients of the Ciprofloxacin tablet have not corroded wires made of 18 carat gold. And the active ingredients of the Nimesulide tablet have corroded the orthodontic wires made of 18 carat gold. Conclusion: Results of the electrochemical studies lead to the conclusion that the corrosion resistance increases for the 18 carat gold electrode in the presence artificial saliva with Ciprofloxacin (200 ppm) and the corrosion resistance decreases for the 18 carat gold electrode in the presence artificial saliva with Nimesulide (200 ppm).
